It’s that time of year. Too much party food, and drink, too little time, sleep, exercise, and healthy eating! Weight sneaks on, energy crashes, and we arrive in January feeling bad about ourselves.
So we make resolutions we can’t keep and feel worse. As a dancer I dreaded the holidays because January equaled damage control without December strategies.
Plan ahead
Have a plan, always, before every event, no exceptions! Choose how much you say yes too, how you prepare your days/nights, schedule fitness and wellness, and build in rest!
Exercise in mini sessions
Time-poor people often forgo exercise. If holiday revelling minimises exercise, change things up. Walk in the morning or right after work for a pre-party energy boost. Break strength or balance work into sneaky “minis”.
Preemptive strike
Eat before parties. You can’t control what’s served or when. It’s easy to overindulge when you’re hungry. A sensible meal and a few party snacks beats empty calories on crackers as dinner.
Water first
Hosts greet you with “What can I get you to drink? I answer, “I’m so thirsty! Can I get a water first?” This delays alcoholic drinks and helps prevent dehydration in this busy (dry or chilly) season when we forget water or don’t feel thirsty.
Selective snacks and cocktails
Skip super-fatty, salty, sugary fare. Look for fresh, least-processed snacks. Also, be honest about portions. Ten tiny “amuse-bouches” still count.
Cocktails? Fancy and festive is fun, but choose light and refreshing. Spritzers, light beers, or non-alcoholic drinks are better. Watch out for “mocktails” laden with sugar. Opt for soda with a splash of fruit juice or lemon.
Social pressure to drink? Pre-tip the bartender and say “Soda all night ,but make it look like a fancy cocktail” (my secret to avoid explanations not like we owe anyone that!) Be a pal, and volunteer as designated driver.
No double-dipping
It’s best to limit indulgences and pick ONE vice per event. Multiple relaxed habits can compound the damage. Staying out way past your bedtime? Skip the champagne. Quick obligatory appearance? Go ahead, enjoy an eggnog. Negotiation not deprivation.
Twister anyone?
Propose movement activities to get everyone laughing, or get down and dance the night away. Cardio and social connection, plus you’ll be less likely to over-eat and drink!
Sugar plums dancing in your head
Even if you have late nights, don’t cut your bedtime routine or consistent exercise out. Remember alcohol can disrupt sleep. Ensure quality if not quantity.
Smart clothes
Pack smart clothes that double as workout wear and your favorite compact workout props for holiday travel. I’m never without my fluid jersey pants that go from yoga to dinner, a resistance band for strength work, and a small ball for releasing travel (or stress) knots.
No checked luggage? Get creative with hotel towels, couch cushions, furniture, etc!
Don’t say yes to everything
“I’m over-booked this season, but let’s schedule a meet-up right now for January. I’d rather catch up after the crazy season.” This lets you off the hook, and might inspire your friends to do the same. In this season of giving, THAT’S A GIFT!
