    Debbie Evans, MSJ

What inspired you to enter the field of fertility?

I was approached and asked to help set up a fertility service at the private hospital that I had worked at. I had never worked within womenโ€™s health but realised women have very distinct health needs throughout the various stages of their reproductive health, and I became fascinated about the specialist care I could provide at one of their most vulnerable stages. I went back to university and studied Fertility care, and Assisted Conception, and became hooked that was 25 years ago. I love being that nurse that empowers women to make critical choices about their health and particularly reproductive ones.ย

What can you tell us about your role with My Surrogacy Journey?

My role as the Clinical & Compliance Director at MSJ is a responsible one that I take very seriously. I bring to this role a wealth of experience in senior health management that spans my 40+ year career. My experience ensures that I can lead the clinical team, to provide the best quality driven service considering regulatory compliance in several jurisdictions and have the knowledge to help mitigate risks for our members. I am responsible for developing and implementing governance frameworks that adheres to clinical and legal standards in several countries and most importantly ensures patient safety whilst in our care and protects MSJ from risk. I personally meet with every set of Intended Parent to ensure they are eligible for treatment and give guidance on the clinical process.

What makes MSJ stand out in the sector?ย

MSJ has challenged the fertility sector and the surrogacy infrastructure to improve and set the standard for care within this industry. We are unique across the world and have built a reputation built on our experience, comprehensive support services, ethical practices, and personalised matching approach. We manage every aspect of the process including:ย

    • Legal guidance to ensure we navigate complex state or international
    • surrogacy laws and most importantly secure parental rights.ย
    • We manage the whole medical process working with chosen partners to
    • ensure communication between IPs and surrogates is uppermost.ย
    • We offer counselling to ensure the sometimes-bumpy road is supported at
    • each stage of the journey.ย
    • We offer financial transparency giving a clear breakdown of all costs and
    • ensuring our IPs have trust in our process.

Is there anything special youโ€™re working on at the moment that youโ€™d like to share?ย

We are working on collecting data from the programme we offer so we can share significant clinical data with our fertility colleagues at national and international conferences so we can shine a spotlight on the incredible difference surrogacy is making in creating beautiful families. There is very limited data available discussing:

    • Surrogate eligibility criteria in different jurisdictionsย
    • Minimising risks by screening effectively, what screening should be
    • doneย
    • Surrogate experiences short- and long-term effects โ€“
    • psychological/counselling support
    • Medical safety โ€“ medical and obstetricย
    • Decisions to choose surrogacyย

What advice would you give to a woman struggling with female health or fertility issues who is unsure how to find the right support?

Start with their GP and donโ€™t be fobbed off. Talking about the problem is the first step and describing symptoms accurately so you can be guided to the appropriate health professional to support you. There is so much recognition of understanding female health issues that is readily available. Depending on what the issues are will determine the next steps to either gynaecology or fertility. ย
